Xiangshan Park

Overview

Xiangshan Park, also known as Fragrant Hills Park, is located on the eastern side of the Western Hills, about 10 kilometers west of central Beijing. Known for its high elevation and dense tree cover, the park enjoys a cooler climate, with spring arriving later and summer days remaining refreshingly cool.

The best time to visit is in late fall when the leaves turn vibrant red, creating a stunning display. The park is also home to groves of apricots, pears, peaches and lilacs, which fill the air with fragrance, along with solemn evergreens that contribute to the park's beauty year-round.

Historical Significance

The history of Xiangshan Park dates back to the Jin Dynasty in 1186 when the Xiangshan Temple was built. For a period, it served as a lodging place for the emperor during his travels. In 1745, during the reign of Emperor Qianlong, several large halls, pagodas, memorial archways and leisure pavilions were constructed, and the area was renamed the Garden of Peacefulness (Jingyiyuan). This complex became one of Qianlong’s favorite summer retreats, alongside Jade Spring Mountain (Yuquanshan) and Longevity Hill (Wanshoushan) in the Summer Palace.
